Chesapeake Chapter Scholarship Programs
The USMMA KP Alumni - Chesapeake Chapter believes that investing in education is investing in the future of the maritime industry. Since 1989, our chapter has awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to deserving midshipmen and graduates pursuing careers at sea. These scholarships represent our commitment to preserving the highest traditions of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
Available Scholarship Programs
Academic Excellence Award
Awarded annually to rising seniors demonstrating exceptional academic performance with GPA above 3.5. Includes $2,500 toward educational expenses and $500 book stipend.
Maritime Industry Scholarship
Supports midshipmen interested in specialized maritime careers including maritime law, engineering, and naval architecture. Award amount: $3,000.
Legacy Scholarship
For children and grandchildren of USMMA graduates, continuing the family tradition of maritime service. Award amount: $2,000.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Chesapeake Chapter scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a current USMMA midshipman in good standing, or a recent graduate within 2 years of commissioning
- Demonstrate financial need as indicated on FAFSA or equivalent documentation
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
- Show commitment to pursuing a maritime-related career after graduation
- Reside in or have significant ties to the Chesapeake Bay region (Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, DC)
Application Process
The scholarship application cycle opens each October and closes March 1st. Complete applications include:
- Online Application Form: Available at kpchesapeake.com/scholarships starting October 1st
- Official Transcript: Current academic record from USMMA Registrar
- Personal Statement: 500-word essay describing career goals and financial need
- Two Letters of Recommendation: One academic, one character reference
- Financial Documentation: FAFSA Student Aid Report or equivalent

Midshipman Alexandra Torres
Class of 2025 - Marine Engineering recipient. Alexandra completed internships with Maersk and Crowley Maritime. "The scholarship allowed me to focus on my studies without financial stress."
